Bangors Organic News
February 2010
After such a long cold spell its great when signs of spring start to appear. The snowdrops are peeping up as are the daffs and our peas, beans, carrots and other polytunnel sowings are all doing well.
THE GARDENS
The Gardens are looking more mature each year now, and the vegetable gardens and the formal gardens have come on so much from when it was all first started back in 2002!
Still have work left to tackle the soft fruit area and because composting is such an important part of our growing system we will need to relocate and build better more robust bins for next year.
Seeds are ordered, varieties selected and sowing is about to start for 2010!
FUTURE PLANS
ORGANIC MARKETS AND FOOD FESTIVALS
The plans to develop part of our Big Green Shed into an organic market and to hold food festivals/farmers markets there 5 or 6 times a year are taking shape. The markets will sell produce that we have grown and made as well as produce from all our wonderful local suppliers. We will keep you informed of progress and the dates for next year, once they are known.
VEGETARIAN COOKERY
Gill is hoping to attend a 2 day Modern Vegetarian cookery course at Ashburton Cookery school in March, as this is about to become a more important focus of our food from 2010 onwards.
WIND TURBINE
We are not getting much help from our local planners on the Gaia 133 11kw wind turbine, and if we are forced to resubmit for a THIRD time we will be asking all our customers to submit letters of support. We will keep you informed.
Many thanks to Triodos bank for their financial support on this project.
SOIL ASSOCIATION FARM SCHOOL COURSES
Watch out for next years dates…. coming soon for our one day courses here at Bangors Organic, part of the Soil Association Organic Farm School scheme.
GREEN TOURISM
We have applied to join the green tourism business scheme (http://www.green-business.co.uk) and will be assessed shortly, hopefully we will be going for gold!
Launched in October ‘Climate Friendly Food ‘ has a very interesting website (http://www.climatefriendlyfood.org.uk) and is a serious attempt to measure the carbon footprint of farmers and growers, Gill is currently inputting all our data so that we can measure our carbon emissions and then using their certification scheme show that we really are a sustainable and green enterprise.
CELEBRATIONS AND HOUSE PARTIES
If you are looking for the ultimate green celebration, then we would be delighted to offer the facilities at Bangors for your party, organic dinner or buffet meals, accommodation for 8, with exclusive use of the house, rooms, and gardens.
If you prefer you can be based at Bangors and hold the party, catered by us, at the beautiful ancient Poundstock Gildhouse (http://www.poundstockgildhouse.co.uk)
Call to discuss your thoughts and to reserve any dates for 2010
And don’t forget all the little extras that we can provide, much chat, walking and sightseeing advice, holistic treatments and massages, tours of the organic gardens, veg boxes, bread and other produce to take home, organic evening meals and a wholly organic wine list, and fully wheelchair accessible accommodation.
Wishing you all the very best,
We look forward to hearing from you
Gill and Neil
